Short-period synthetic seismograms are computed to determine the relative amplitudes and arrival times of P, pP, pwP (water surface reflection), and sP phases. Except along nodal planes of upgoing p, pwP is of greater amplitude than sP. For central Aleutian earthquakes, pwP dominates over sP and pP at North American stations for thrust mechanisms and modelled crustal structures. The pwP phase is clearly identified in three Aleutian events and can be used to constrain focal depths. Complex fracturing processes are identified in two of the events. In simple events, smaller phases which are consistent from station to station can be identified as sub-surface reflections and used for modelling the structure of the forearc.  相似文献

A degradation experiment with zooplankton was carried out to investigate the diagenesis of zooplanktonic organic matter, lipids, and lipid classes. In addition, reactivities and the quantitative relation between bulk organic carbon and waxes (which are the biomarkers of zooplankton) were compared during the experiment to evaluate the possibility of estimating the contributions of zooplanktonic organic matter in organic carbon pools, such as settling particles and surface sediments, from the wax concentration. Lipids were found to be more labile than the bulk organic carbon. Major parts of the organic carbon and lipids which remained on day 120 were found in the particulate fraction, and the accumulations of stable organic carbon and lipids in the dissolved fraction were limited. Although the lipids were more labile than the bulk organic carbon in the early phase of the experiment, the degradation rate of lipids obviously decreased in the subsequent degradation period, demonstrating the presence of stable lipids in zooplankton. Whereas triglycerides readily decreased, phospholipids persisted, making a major contribution to particulate lipids throughout the experiment. Waxes and other structural lipids such as glycolipids were also stably preserved in particulate lipids, suggesting that stable lipids in particulate matter are composed of structural lipids and waxes during early diagenesis. The degradation rate of waxes showed values comparable to that of bulk organic carbon after 11 days of degradation, resulting in constant ratios of waxes/bulk organic carbon (0.8 ± 0.2%, n = 7) during the later incubation period (after 11 days). This result suggests that the ratio could prove useful in evaluating the zooplanktonic organic carbon in organic carbon pools such as surface sediments and settling particulates.  相似文献

Gas‐saturated groundwater forms bubbles when brought to atmospheric pressure, preventing precise determination of its in situ dissolved gas concentrations. To overcome this problem, a modeling approach called the atmospheric sampling method is suggested here to recover the in situ dissolved gas concentrations of groundwater collected ex situ under atmospheric conditions at the Horonobe Underground Research Laboratory, Japan. The results from this method were compared with results measured at the same locations using two special techniques, the sealed sampler and pre‐evacuated vial methods, that have been developed to collect groundwater under its in situ conditions. In gas‐saturated groundwater cases, dissolved methane and inorganic carbon concentrations derived using the atmospheric sampling method were mostly within ±4 and ±10%, respectively, of values from the sealed sampler and pre‐evacuated vial methods. In gas‐unsaturated groundwater, however, the atmospheric sampling method overestimated the in situ dissolved methane concentrations, because the groundwater pressure at which bubbles appear (Pcritical) was overestimated. The atmospheric sampling method is recommended for use where gas‐saturated groundwater can be collected only ex situ under atmospheric conditions.  相似文献

Time-series data of the vertical structure of the Soya Warm Current (SWC) were obtained by a bottom-mounted acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP) in the middle of the Soya Strait from September 2006 to July 2008. The site of the ADCP measurement was within the coverage of the ocean-radar measurement around the strait. The volume transport of the SWC through the strait is estimated on the basis of both the vertical structure observed by the ADCP and the horizontal structure observed by the radars for the first time. The annual transport estimates are 0.62–0.67 Sv (1 Sv = 106 m3s−1). They are somewhat smaller than the difference between the previous estimates of the inflow and outflow through other straits in the Sea of Japan, and smaller than those obtained in the region downstream of the strait during 2004–05 (0.94–1.04 Sv). The difference in the two periods may be attributed to interannual variability of the SWC and/or the different measurement locations.  相似文献

The objective of this study is to simulate three-dimensional behavior of shipping water and to predict the impact pressure on the deck using a particle method. An experiment carried out in a two-dimensional wave tank with a fixed deck model was numerically analyzed in three dimensions. The fluid motion, the surface elevation, and the impact pressure on the deck were compared between the experiment and the calculation and good agreement was obtained.  相似文献

Intensive CTD observations that resolve the mean and tidal components were done with a total of 129 casts in summer of 2001 at Bussol’ Strait. Based on these data and all the available historical data, we have revealed the outflow from Bussol’ Strait to the Pacific and the significant diapycnal mixing in the strait. In the range 27.0−27.3σ θ , the water property in Bussol’ Strait is almost identical to that of the Kuril Basin Water (KBW). The KBW out of Bussol’ Strait forms a water mass front with the East Kamchatka Current Water (EKCW). This front also corresponds to the front of the Oyashio Current. In the lower part of the intermediate layer (27.3−27.6σ θ ), part of the water in the strait is characterized by lower temperature, lower salinity, and higher dissolved oxygen than that of KBW and EKCW, which can be explained only by the diapycnal mixing. The strong diapycnal mixing in the strait can also be shown by the density inversion, occurrence frequency of which corresponds well to the amplitude distribution of the diurnal current. In the density range 26.7−26.8σ θ , the water in Bussol’ Strait has the lowest potential vorticity, suggesting that it is a source region of the low potential vorticity water. Seasonal change of the water can reach up to a density of 26.8σ θ around Bussol’ Strait. This leads us to propose that the combination of winter convection and local tidal mixing leads to effective ventilation of the intermediate layer.  相似文献

The results of subsurface gas monitoring by application of gas chromatography (GC) to the gas composition of bubbles associated with groundwater for seismogeochemical studies are reported. An automated gas monitoring system was used to determine gas compositions in a 500-m borehole at the Haruno Crustal Movement Observation Site (HOS), central Japan during period 1, from December 1999 to December 2000. The average ± two standard deviation (2SD) compositions of gases in this period were He = 82 ± 29 ppmV, H2 = 170 ± 62 ppmV, Ar = 0.05 ± 0.07%, N2 = 50 ± 8%, and CH4 = 45 ± 6%. A new automated gas monitoring system equipped with a micro-GC was installed in the borehole at the HOS, and gas bubbles from the borehole were monitored during period 2, from December 2006 to March 2007. The average ± two standard deviation (2SD) compositions of gases in this period were He = 8 ± 7 ppmV, H2 = 13 ± 15 ppmV, Ar = 0.6 ± 0.3%, N2 = 66 ± 7%, and CH4 = 14 ± 14%. The gas concentration ratios (He/Ar, H2/Ar, N2/Ar, and CH4/Ar) fluctuated significantly over time and repeatedly showed abrupt spike-like increases during period 2. The gas compositions obtained in period 1 and 2 were markedly different. Over the period from 2006 to 2007, the gas bubbles were depleted in He, H2, and CH4 of deep origin, but enriched in Ar and N2 of atmospheric origin. This difference can be interpreted as being due to an irreversible change of the aquifer/gas system. The present deep component in the HOS gas is estimated to have composition He = 63 ppmV, H2 = 37 ppmV, Ar = 0.17%, N2 = 63%, and CH4 = 37%. The new monitoring system is able to analyze the gas composition using a smaller volume of sample gas and with greater precision than the previous system. During the 3-month monitoring period 2, the separation capacity of the capillary column of the micro-GC was sufficiently maintained to determine gas-chromatographic peak areas for the five gaseous species examined. This study confirms that the new monitoring system with micro-GC is promising for continuous subsurface gas monitoring for earthquake prediction studies.  相似文献

Following 198 years of dormancy, a small phreatic eruption started at the summit of Unzen Volcano (Mt. Fugen) in November 1990. A swarm of volcano-tectonic (VT) earthquakes had begun below the western flank of the volcano a year before this eruption, and isolated tremor occurred below the summit shortly before it. The focus of VT events had migrated eastward to the summit and became shallower. Following a period of phreatic activity, phreatomagmatic eruptions began in February 1991, became larger with time, and developed into a dacite dome eruption in May 1991 that lasted approximately 4 years. The emergence of the dome followed inflation, demagnetization and a swarm of high-frequency (HF) earthquakes in the crater area. After the dome appeared, activity of the VT earthquakes and the summit HF events was replaced largely by low-frequency (LF) earthquakes. Magma was discharged nearly continuously through the period of dome growth, and the rate decreased roughly with time. The lava dome grew in an unstable form on the shoulder of Mt. Fugen, with repeating partial collapses. The growth was exogenous when the lava effusion rate was high, and endogenous when low. A total of 13 lobes grew as a result of exogenous growth. Vigorous swarms of LF earthquakes occurred just prior to each lobe extrusion. Endogenous growth was accompanied by strong deformation of the crater floor and HF and LF earthquakes. By repeated exogenous and endogenous growth, a large dome was formed over the crater. Pyroclastic flows frequently descended to the northeast, east, and southeast, and their deposits extensively covered the eastern slope and flank of Mt. Fugen. Major pyroclastic flows took place when the lava effusion rate was high. Small vulcanian explosions were limited in the initial stage of dome growth. One of them occurred following collapse of the dome. The total volume of magma erupted was 2.1×108 m3 (dense-rock-equivalent); about a half of this volume remained as a lava dome at the summit (1.2 km long, 0.8 km wide and 230–540 m high). The eruption finished with extrusion of a spine at the endogenous dome top. Several monitoring results convinced us that the eruption had come to an end: the minimal levels of both seismicity and rockfalls, no discharge of magma, the minimal SO2 flux, and cessation of subsidence of the western flank of the volcano. The dome started slow deformation and cooling after the halt of magma effusion in February 1995.  相似文献
